Do I need to have anything prepared when coming to you to plan my new kitchen?

It's helpful to have room dimensions, where there are or will be windows, doors, low or high ceilings and beams. If you've got a feeling about materials, styles and appliances that's great, if not we can work through all the choices together.

What materials do you use for the cabinets?

All our kitchens are custom made so we use various materials depending on the commission. This usually includes tulipwood doors, hardwood ply (usually birch) and oak dovetailed drawers for strength. We also love working with Cherry and Walnut.

What styles of kitchen cabinetry do you make?

Our cabinet makers can craft any style you like. The most popular is classic Shaker in style, sometimes with twist, often with mouldings. We’ve also made patterned wall-to-wall pantry cupboard doors and Edwin Lutyens inspired furniture.

How much space should I leave around an island unit?

The minimum is 1000mm but we prefer 1200mm. It makes it easier when everyone is using the kitchen at the same time.

Can you work around wonky walls and floors in period properties?

We love working in Period Properties. Handmade cabinetry is ideal for it as we custom make to fit around uneven floors, wonky walls, beams and tricky nooks.

What colour would you choose for your dream kitchen?

From the @mylands range our cabinet maker Andy would choose Messel - it's a gorgeous green. Our designer Mike loves Sloane Square, which is a refined grey. Ella is thinking Blueprint - a luxuriously dark blue. One of the many beautiful things about handmade and hand painted kitchens is that they are built to last and can be repainted to give a fresh look.

What is the must have feature in a bespoke kitchen at the moment?

These are all high on our wish lists;

  • a pantry cupboard to keep all your dry foods together in one place,
  • lots of drawers (for pans, dishes, and crockery) as you can see everything more easily,
  • an Island to provide a prep area and breakfast bar. It's also helpful for 'zoning' open plan designs
  • a boiling water tap
  • an 'appliance garage' so you can hide away the coffee machine, toaster and crumbs
  • a wine fridge
