Our story
VATRAA is an architecture and interior design practice founded in 2018 by Anamaria Pircu and Bogdan Rusu. From our London and Bucharest-based offices, we design buildings with character and power to act positively.
We believe all three elements of architectural, interior and furniture design have great influence and impact upon each other in the overall feeling of any project. That is why we offer all three services, and look to develop them slowly in tandem, so as to achieve a result which is unique in its atmosphere, but also 100% efficient in its use of space.
We believe that architecture has the power to improve people's lives. To achieve this, we embrace and use each project's constraints as a catalyst for creative, problem-solving solutions. This approach leads to buildings and spaces completely customised to meet the needs of the end-users in terms of efficiency and atmosphere.
We believe that architecture should leave a valuable legacy for the future. We investigate the project's surroundings and react with designs fully grounded in the particular context we operate in. By using natural, expressive materials that age beautifully, we create buildings with character that stand the test of time.
We believe that architecture should consider environmental impact. Instead of adding artificial 'green' elements to projects, we propose environmentally friendly solutions that achieve more with fewer resources. Our buildings are often stripped down to the essential yet powerful elements that define the functionality and atmosphere of a space.
Our approach has been recognised through many international awards and publications including:
- British Home Awards, Home transformation of the Year, Highly Commended
- Bucharest Architecture Annual, Apartment Interior Category, Winner
- Plastic monument competition, Italy, Winner
- Young Architect of the Year, Netherlands, Winner
- Interior Design magazine
- Grand Designs magazine
- Igloo Architecture magazine

Project: Ex-Council House Transformation in Bermondsey
2020
£110,000
London
The client commissioned VATRAA for a complete refurbishment of her 1980’s ex-council house, aimed at keeping a discrete appearance on the outside, while optimising space and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere on the inside.
"The architects maintained the approach of listening, engaging, paying attention to the minutiae, whilst simultaneously responding to constraints. I’m delighted for their Home Transformation of the Year at the British Home Awards, they deserve it." Bernadette, client

2019
£800,000
London
We transformed a former artist studio with the only natural light coming from the top glazed roof into a 4 bedroom house.
A minimalist steel stair leads to the first floor occupied by a bright day zone. The design celebrates the 100 years old structure of the former artist studio, exposing the original rafters and introducing a new chevron pattern in between. Complemented warm wood tones and stainless steel surfaces, the space is vibrant and inviting.

£150,000
London
The project brief required us to propose a wrap-around extension to allow for an open space kitchen and dining area.
The resulted design is a homage to the old Victorian house. The pitched roof is inspired by the roofline of the old building while the bricks are reclaimed from the demolition of the sidewall. A blue round window continues a series of stained glass insertions found in the original building. We had the opportunity to introduce interesting structural pieces, to maximize light.
Project: Apartment renovation
2019
£100,000
Winner of Apartment interior, Bucharest Architecture Annual
"The project is characterized by a smart and sensible way in which it deals with and transforms the pre-existing. (...) Everything was carefully designed, detailed, even the furniture, and when it is so, the spaces became coherent and therefore timeless. The project shows an excellent balance between the different textures, colours, materials and all of them revealed by a poetic control of the light, whether natural or artificial." Jury
