Established by Catrina Stewart and Hugh McEwen, the practice works on a variety of new-build multi-unit housing, high street regeneration, and public realm projects. These buildings celebrate the colour, materiality, and narratives of the everyday use of these new spaces. This has been recognized in the practice being named as BD's 'Young Architect of the Year' in 2020, shortlisted for Dezeen's 'Emerging Architect of the Year 2020', part of the Rising Star cohort by RIBA Journal in 2019, winning a prize at the New London Architecture 'Don’t Move, Improve!' awards 2018, being nominated as a finalist for The Architects’ Journal 'Small Projects' award, and the practice’s work appearing in Elle Deco, Vogue, the Guardian, and on several BBC programmes.
“Office S&M is certainly one to watch.”
RIBA Journal, 2019
Architects & Designers Project range: £100,000 - £1,000,000
Project: Valetta House
A family in Ealing, with three children, commissioned Office S&M to refurbish their house and extend to create a generous living space on the ground floor and a new bedroom in the loft, so that each child had their own space in the house.
“The greatest joy of this renovation is that the architects have made the alterations so personal to us, with several pockets of space created to fit around how we live.” - Rachel and Chris, clients
Project: Salmen House
“One-off houses are a rare breed in London but there are still some fine examples. This new addition to a terrace in Plaistow by Office S&M is a modest but clever design.” - Marcus Field writing in the Evening Standard
This new build-to-rent three bed, three bath house, with textured render and terrazzo details, contains generous vertical spaces on a constrained corner site.
Finalist in the Architects Journal 'Small Projects' Awards.
Project: Janus House
The clients approached Office S&M to replace a poorly built lean-to behind their terraced house in Walthamstow. They wanted the new extension to be clearly different from the late 1800's property, while still being related in scale to it. They challenged Office S&M to design an extension that contained both a bathroom and a kitchen that each looked over the garden.
A sprayed on rubber exterior creates a monolithic background which wraps the two halves of the 'two faced' extension together.
Mintworks will be a new 4000sqf converted workspace located on the ground floor in the heart of Hoxton. Designed as a flexible and inclusive workspace with a focus on mental and physical health. Creating an atmosphere of calm, while still being expressive and stimulating at the same time. Filled with natural light, fresh plants and bold colours, the spaces are designed to be uplifting and energizing to those who work here.
Office S&M have secured planning permission for the scheme.
