Our story

Cryer&Coe architects are an award winning design centred practice established in Bristol in 2018. We put our clients and the brief at the centre of each project, regardless of size, sector or budget. Our approach is to listen, understand and respond. Our relationship with you will shape the project we create together. This process allows us to find effective, integrated and bespoke solutions and simplify our clients’ experience.

Each of our projects is unique and evolves from understanding our clients, their brief, the site and future users. We have found that the stronger the relationship and greater the collaboration with client, fellow consultants and contractors then the more successful the project.

We offer an architecture that is refined, simple and thoughtful; combining form, function and aesthetics, with the aim of realising and exceeding client’s expectations. We are passionate about light, space and creating excellent environments for people to live and work which not only look great, but work in practice; making our clients’ lives easier as a result. We are proud to have already created beautiful spaces that have a positive impact on the lives of their occupants and the environment.

Both Duncan and Matthew have gained considerable experience and expertise in practices in London and Bristol with projects ranging from the care and extra care and commercial sectors, through to high end residential developments. Our experience of working successfully across disciplines and sectors and with different drivers - environmental, social, historic, economic and spatial - has given us the tools to deliver complex buildings, programmes and strategies with a high level of service.

Recently completed projects include Rawlings & Son Office development, winner of a British Council for Offices Award for Projects up to 1500m² category, and Stacked Up, a residential refurbishment in central Bristol nominated for a Local Authority Building Control Award.

Project: The Orange House

2019

Bristol

This project extends a a family home to create a new split level kitchen dining area with direct access to the garden beyond. Vibrancy is added through the use of bold colours in the appliances and acoustic baffles slung from the ceiling. From the outset the acoustic environment was considered as all too often these large hard surfaced spaces do not provide the ideal space for a bustling family to gather.

Project: The Balls House

2019

Bristol

A side return extension has been added to this property in north Bristol in need of additional space for a growing family. With a somewhat different layout to the typical terraced infill extension, a small snug area looks over the garden with the large kitchen and dining area which positioned centrally, is flooded with natural light throughout the day via top light. Alongside the snug is a practical utility area. Further detail and warmth was added to the interior with the rafters left exposed.

Project: Berkeley Road

2018

Bristol

Completed continuously over three phases to enable the family to remain in residence the works comprise: washroom and dormers to top floor creating spacious guest bedrooms; refurbishment of first floor washroom; new porch and garage; lower ground and ground floor extension and refurbishment creating master bedroom with ensuite, kitchen and snug, games room, utility, double height dining room and entrance foyer with views across landscaped gardens.

Project: Norfold House

2017

Bristol

Much like the neighbouring project Stacked Up, this particular house had suffered from ad hoc alterations and additions over the course of its life. The proposals see the complete refurbishment of the house including a substantial loft conversion to provide a guest bedroom and ensuite.
