Our story

Founded in 2018 by Dickon Hayward, Material Works is an Architecture practice committed to providing exceptional design that balances creativity with pragmatism.

We work across scales and sectors from individually crafted homes to large scale commercial refurbishments and new buildings. We approach each commission as a distinct project, developing designs form the specific context and client requirements to create up-lifting, positive modern spaces that surpass expectations.

We take an energetic approach to the creative design process, developing ideas through drawings, models, collage and conversation. We have a deep knowledge of construction methods both traditional and contemporary and specialise in the interface of the two in a sensitive and controlled manner. We seek to collaborate closely with clients throughout the design process, taking an iterative approach from concept design through to construction.

We are experienced in working closely with contractors and trades to ensure projects are delivered on time and to budget.

Project: Hackney Refurbishment

2018

£135,000

Hackney, London

Having moved from a substantial loft apartment to a Victorian terrace, the clients were keen to recapture the open sense of space and light their former home had offered. The brief called for an open space that could be adapted for either entertaining, dining or relaxing simply by moving loose furniture. To achieve this, the kitchen was moved back into the centre of the house, leaving the new room free of fixed joinery except for a single run of low level solid oak units
