Founded in 2018 by Dickon Hayward, Material Works is an Architecture practice committed to providing exceptional design that balances creativity with pragmatism.
We work across scales and sectors from individually crafted homes to large scale commercial refurbishments and new buildings. We approach each commission as a distinct project, developing designs form the specific context and client requirements to create up-lifting, positive modern spaces that surpass expectations.
We take an energetic approach to the creative design process, developing ideas through drawings, models, collage and conversation. We have a deep knowledge of construction methods both traditional and contemporary and specialise in the interface of the two in a sensitive and controlled manner. We seek to collaborate closely with clients throughout the design process, taking an iterative approach from concept design through to construction.
We are experienced in working closely with contractors and trades to ensure projects are delivered on time and to budget.
Architects & Designers Project range: £80,000 - £1,000,000
Project: Hackney Refurbishment
Having moved from a substantial loft apartment to a Victorian terrace, the clients were keen to recapture the open sense of space and light their former home had offered. The brief called for an open space that could be adapted for either entertaining, dining or relaxing simply by moving loose furniture. To achieve this, the kitchen was moved back into the centre of the house, leaving the new room free of fixed joinery except for a single run of low level solid oak units
Project: Stoke Newington
Stoke Newington, London
Material Works were commissioned to design a a small addition to this victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington, London. Working closely with the client we developed a simple extension that dramatically improved the daylight and function of the kitchen. The rear wall was opened with sliding doors above a new oak window seat and a new glass roof was installed along the side return supported on structural oak.
Project: Stoke Newington Roof
Stoke Newington, London
A bespoke interpretation to the mansard roof addition typically added to victorian houses with butterfly roofs. The design maximises the space available to create a fantastic new living space full of natural light. Bespoke crafted joinery maximises available space and cleverly provides additional storage areas within the roof eaves. A unique open tread solid oak stair provides a distinct contemporary feel.
