If you are planning a full scale renovation or if you simply want to re-decorate your home, we have picked out this year's inspirational trends when renovating your home. You don't need to invest a fortune either, sometimes re-painting the kitchen cupboards or replacing the flooring is all that is needed to bring your home up to date.

This year, there is a lot of colour around, with home owners incorporating bold jewel tones into their living space. There is still a strong demand for the grey palette but now we are seeing pops of colour to brighten it up. And although open plan living continues to be on most peoples wish list, we are seeing more of a structured space with separate zones created for various activities in the home but allowing the family to be together.

1. Incorporate deep colours into the interiors

Jewel tones are very popular at the moment - incorporating deep greens and bold blues into your scheme will bring your home right up to date. If you want to keep your home bright, paint your kitchen blue but keep the walls bright white - this will give a gorgeous Californian vibe.

Emerald green is also creeping into our interiors and this could be in part due to greenery being Pantone's colour of the year. Go for a deep green sofa, cushions, throws, bedding and have plenty of lush green plants around your home to complete the look.

If you are feeling brave and want to add more than accessories, paint some of your walls in a deep shade - this can look smart in a snug or bedroom where you want to create a calm atmospheric space. These deep jewel tones can be used throughout the home - anywhere from the bathroom to the hallway.

2. Light wood effect flooring

The clean Scandi look is one that is staying and it is a perfect backdrop to allow colour to break into the scheme. Flooring is a great way to incorporate the light look and you can easily change your scheme with different paint colours and furnishings as long as you have the basics right.

Laying the the same light wood effect flooring throughout your home is a great way to make your home flow seamlessly from one room to the next and make your space light and bright. You don't have to spend a fortune either to update your home - go for good quality laminate which can really give the effect of wooden flooring. Laminate is a low cost alternative to solid wood or engineered flooring, with the laminated photographic top layer able to replicate the look of different styles of wood flooring. Make sure you choose a good quality product and opt for at least 8mm thick to ensure the floor is strong. We love the Quickstep Largo range from FloorsDirectLtd.co.uk which is brilliant quality for the price and will give your home a lovely light and bright look.

3. Broken plan living

Open plan living has been so popular in our homes over the past decade and you can see why - it makes your home feel large and bright and turns it into a sociable space. The downside of open plan living is that you can often find yourself with no space to go to get some quiet time or toys can easily find their way into the kitchen. So we welcome the new trend of "broken plan" living where you have all of the benefits of a large open plan space but avoid many of the issues.

The concept of broken plan living is to incorporate different zones within the open plan space, so it's clear where the play area and the dining area are, for example. You can do this by dividing your open plan space with mezzanine floors, chimney breasts, partial walls or internal windows. Broken plan living still gives you the benefit of everyone being together in one room, however, it also allows you to create different spaces to play, eat and work.

The best time to incorporate the individual zones is when you are renovating or extending - it's far easier to build a mezzanine floor during the renovation rather than in an existing open plan space. So think carefully when you are carrying out your renovation and how it could work best for your family.

4. Add plenty of texture

When you are re-decorating, add plenty of texture through fabric throughout your home. If you are going for wooden or tiled floors, have plenty of deep pile soft rugs around your home to make the space feel homely. Materials like velvet are having a real moment, so go for a sofa in velvet or simply choose new velvet cushions to bring your current scheme right up to date.

5. Be bold in the bathroom

Contrasting with the neutral bathrooms that will always be popular, we are seeing strong bold colours such as orange, green and blues in the bathroom. If you want to embrace the colour trend then go for a strong vivid wallpaper or introduce strong colours with towels and accessories in your bathroom. We adore this bold look below from C.P. Hart – it goes all out and mixes the lush tropical wallpaper with this deep blue bath.

Another bathroom trend that is having a real moment is swapping out chrome taps and fittings for brushed copper or brass. This is a really easy way to update your current bathroom and also looks great with the deep colours that are so popular.
