If you’re used to working from home, it’s easy to feel disconnected or distracted. But a few thoughtful adjustments can transform your space into a place where you’re more productive and inspired.

What’s the secret? Making choices that reflect how you work best, allowing you to get things done in your way, not how everyone else does things.

Choose the right spot

Start by picking a space that feels separate from your living areas. If you can, avoid setting up your desk in a high-traffic part of the house where noise and distractions can creep in.

Even if your home space is limited, try to carve out a small corner or room that you can truly dedicate to work. The clearer the boundary between your work and relaxation areas, the easier it will be to stay focused and transition between the two.

Invest in functional furniture

A sturdy, comfortable desk and chair are the foundation of any home office. Look for a desk with enough space for your computer, paperwork, devices and any other essentials. If you’re tight on space, consider a corner desk or something modular that can expand as your needs grow.

Don’t underestimate the importance of an ergonomic chair. You’ll notice a significant difference after a few hours of sitting in a well-designed one – your back and posture will thank you. A chair that offers lumbar support can help prevent aches and pains from building up over the day.

Get your tech in order

A clutter-free desk is one thing, but a solid tech setup should take your productivity to the next level. First, make sure you have reliable internet.

Slow broadband can be a real mood-killer when video calls drop or files take forever to load. Compare broadband and phone deals to find a plan that fits your needs, so you don’t have to waste time on technical hiccups.

Additionally, consider adding a second monitor or a larger screen to improve your workflow. It’s a simple upgrade that makes multitasking so much easier.

Lighting matters

Proper lighting can drastically change the atmosphere of your workspace. Natural light is ideal if you can get it, but if not, make sure your lighting mimics daylight to keep your energy up. A desk lamp with adjustable brightness can help you focus without straining your eyes when it’s dark.

Try to position your desk near a window, or invest in smart lighting solutions that adjust according to the time of day. A properly-lit space can lift your mood and keep you alert.

Personalise the space

Finally, your home office should reflect who you are. Surround yourself with elements that inspire you – whether it’s art, plants, posters, prints or a few family photos. Personal touches can help you feel more connected to your work and make the space inviting.

But remember, balance is important, too. Keep clutter to a minimum so your desk stays clear for focus.
