Contemporary kitchens work so well in both busy family kitchens and calm minimalist homes alike. Choosing a modern kitchen style means you have a streamlined, simple look that can be updated with colour, or you can choose to keep it simple.

If you are looking to update your kitchen and love the look of a contemporary kitchen, we chat to some of our experts who share what is trending right now for an ultra modern kitchen.

With thanks to Sandy Jalali of Silke Kitchens, Matthew Julian of Perfect Fit Kitchens and Marco Stocchetti of MAS Kuchen for their advice.

Are there any popular colours that work well in a modern kitchen?

"Our clients are becoming more adventurous with their choices and our Alaska Blu lacquer has proved to be popular as a statement colour to complement oak flooring. Our new Moon Blue dark lacquer has also been in demand for a dramatic statement in larger, lighter spaces." explains Matthew

"Navy, navy, navy! With a touch of champagne, concrete doors and bars. A great and timeless combination that steers away from being boring, light and overly neutral." says Sandy

What are the latest trends for appliances in a modern kitchen?

"We supply self-cleaning ovens with every kitchen we do. Induction hobs are huge these days and have taken over gas almost completely. More powerful extractors are a must in open plan spaces," explains Sandy

With the rise of coffee consumption these days, we are supplying a lot of coffee machines to our customers."

"Boiling water taps like the Quooker Cube are now even more in demand - the Cube will provide hot & cold, boiling AND sparkling water." says Matthew "Our clients also seem to be very focused on appliance design and appearance - there has been an uptake of interest lately in the Dolce Stil Novo range from Smeg which comes with a handsome copper trim."

"Hobs and sinks flush mounted to the surface are a must have in a contemporary kitchen, creating a streamlined look." says Marco.

What are the latest ideas for lighting to give a kitchen an ultra modern look?

"Ceiling boxing above islands with shadow-gaps and strip lighting are a big thing these days. LED, plastered in strips are everywhere and look stunning and elegant in modern spaces." says Sandy

"Built in lighting is a must in a modern kitchen, with lighting built under slim worktops creating a contemporary look." explains Marco

"LED strip lights used to internally light cabinets with smoked glass doors are proving to be popular. More industrial style pendant lights in steel and copper are also coming into fashion for use above kitchen islands. " says Matthew

Any styles of cabinets and worktops that you would recommend to give a really modern look?

"Marble effect quartz continues to be popular and our customers love slimline units of 20mm for a really modern look. Handleless kitchens create a streamlined look and perfect for the ultra modern kitchen," says Marco

"We are also seeing industrial looking concrete effect cabinet doors grow in popularity."

"Matt lacquered units all the way, with touches of wood veneers and sometimes concrete cabinets also. Gloss is dead, at least for the time being." says Sandy.

"One of the more interesting new finishes available from Scavolini, which is in keeping with the recent trend for industrially styled kitchens, is Biomalta. This is a very tough cement-style material which is trowelled onto the door for an ultra modern textured appearance." explains Matthew.

Do you have any other advice to creating an ultra modern kitchen?

"Less is more. Kitchens are a compromise. Manage your expectations, as the magazine kitchens are not possible in every house. Make the most of your space by marrying practicality with aesthetics. Work with your designer to get the best out of the space with a beautiful kitchen also." explain Sandy.

"Dekton worktops are starting to gain traction as a popular alternative to quartz or granite. Dekton is incredibly hardwearing and has a variety of fashionable finishes that imitate oxidised metals, concrete, and veined stone." says Matthew.
