Why choose a London architect?

The London architects on Love Renovate have a broad range of experience which will help make your renovation go smoothly. There are so many things to look out when renovating a London property, and a local London architect will be experienced and know how to deal with any of the local issues that may arise.

With so many beautiful period properties in London, it's common that your home will be based in a conservation area. What would normally be a fairly straightforward extension or loft conversion will likely have to go through planning permission. Your local London architect will know best how to succeed planning and get it approved on the first attempt.

Other issues such as the Right of Light can impact London properties. Particularly where buildings are in close proximity, even a small extension may impact your neighbours Right to Light. An experienced London architect will be used to dealing with this and will help you work with a surveyor, should you need one. They will also help on design solutions to help reduce the loss of light to your neighbours, such as glazed side returns.

The Party Wall Act commonly needs to be complied with in London, which your London architect will be able to advise whether this applies to your project. They will be able to recommend Party Wall Surveyors who can ensure that your renovation has been carried out in accordance with the Party Wall Act. Homes that commonly impact the Party Wall include basement conversions, loft conversions and extensions, particularly if you are in a semi-detached or terraced property.

London architects are also so experienced in the style of property in London and making the most out of a small space, particularly when outdoor space is limited. There are so many beautiful period properties in London and your architects will have so much experience in designing something that is either completely sympathetic to the nature of the property, if you want to keep it looking traditional for example, or a really modern extension that will work so well set against a traditional style.

They will have great ideas on how to maximise the light, particularly in places such as London where the homes are often terraced and extending will only block the light even further. An architect will also help you make the most out of your space, how to make your home flow well and also extend seamlessly into the garden.

What type of projects do your London architects cover?

Our London architects cover a broad range in style, from traditional extensions on period properties, to contemporary renovations if you are looking for something different.

As these architects are all based in London, they understand any planning issues that may arise and how to best style the extension in order to ensure that your project is successful.

All of our London architects have so much experience on the common types of projects including loft conversions, rear extensions, basements conversions and internal renovations.

What should I expect to pay for my London architect?

The London architects that we feature on Love Renovate vary in terms of budget - starting at projects of around £70,000 upwards. We also say you should budget around 15% of your total project cost on your professional fees, with architects being a large proportion of this cost.

Architects will charge more depending on how much they are involved in your project, so if they are doing an end to end project management, expect to pay more.

Here are some more of our very favourite renovations by London architects on Love Renovate, to give you some inspiration...

Modern glazed extension

We love this modern extension on this period property. The steel around the extension contrasts so well with the traditional brickwork and the sliding doors are completely flush with the patio, allowing a seamless integration.

Fabulous side return

Side returns are so popular in London where space is limited. Often extending into the side of the property, which is often wasted space, can give you the extra width to give you the large kitchen of your dreams, without extending into the garden. Many people combine the side return with a rear extension to really extend the footprint of their home.

We love this modern side return where the ceiling has been glazed to allow more light to flood in. The large sliding doors allow the kitchen to be integrated with the garden, for a wonderful sociable space.

Large extension

We love this modern extension on this period London property by mimodo architects. This home was lucky enough to have a large area at the side and have maximised the space with a very modern side return extension.

We also love that the home has fabulous internal crittall windows which lead out onto a courtyard - they add something very interesting and also let so much light in here. The modern look continues in the interior which has a real industrial look to it.

Rear extension

This home has been given a large contemporary rear extension, which accommodates this striking open plan kitchen diner.

The wonderful sky lights and the huge sliding doors keep the space so light. We love the style of the kitchen with the wonderful polished concrete floor.
