Small decorated Christmas tree in a compact British flat living room
Illustrative image.

You don’t need a big tree to make your flat feel Christmassy. We’ve picked six smaller artificial trees, from slim designs that tuck into a corner to potted trees for a table or windowsill, plus a half tree that sits against the wall.

We haven’t assembled or measured these trees ourselves, so check the retailer’s dimensions against your room. If you have more space, try our broader artificial-tree roundup. Our slim-tree guide has taller narrow options, and how to choose a realistic-looking tree explains the foliage choices.

A closer look at each pick

Best potted tree without a plug

1. Cox & Cox Indoor Outdoor Bergen Spruce Pre-Lit 4ft

The 4ft Bergen is 120cm tall and 50cm across. Its pot is only 24cm wide, but it’s the branches you need to make room for. One hundred warm-white micro LEDs run on three AA batteries, so you can put it beside a chair or in a corner without running a cable to a socket. We think it would suit a porch too, as long as you follow its outdoor-use instructions.

Choose it if: You want a pre-lit potted tree for a spot without a handy socket and have room for its 50cm width.

Consider instead: You’ll need to replace the batteries, and the potted shape looks different from a full tree on a stand.

Best very narrow floor tree

2. Christmas Tree World Pre-Lit Green Italian Pencilimo 4ft

This pre-lit Pencilimo is 120cm tall from the floor and only 42cm across. Its PVC branches are attached, and it has 150 warm-white LEDs. It could work in the gap beside a sofa or near a doorway, provided you can still walk past comfortably. You won’t get the wide, layered shape of a standard spruce, so check that you like the pencil outline. Plan where its lead will run, too.

Choose it if: You need a 4ft tree that’s only 42cm across and have a socket nearby.

Consider instead: There’s less room for big baubles on its narrow branches, and the built-in lights need mains power.

Best against a wall

3. Christmas Tree World Woodland Pine Half Tree 4ft

The Woodland Pine half tree is 4ft tall, about 70cm across the front and 42cm from wall to tip. Measure both the wall space and the distance it will come into the room. Its mixed PE and PVC branches are hinged, but you’ll still need to open them out. It comes unlit, so you can choose a light colour and replace the string separately later.

Choose it if: A flat-backed tree would give you more of a Christmas-tree shape without taking over the room.

Consider instead: It needs a wall, your own lights and a position where people won’t see too much of its side.

Best fuller tabletop tree

4. Christmas Tree World Pre-Lit Cairngorm Pine 3ft

The 3ft Cairngorm is shorter than the 4ft trees here, but its branches spread a fairly generous 73cm across. It has moulded PE foliage, pinecones and warm-white built-in lights. That fuller shape could look lovely on a sideboard, but check the surface is sturdy and wide enough first. A 3ft label can make this tree sound smaller than its branch spread really is.

Choose it if: You want a fuller-looking little tree and have a sturdy table or a corner that can take its 73cm width.

Consider instead: It needs more space than the pencil trees and a socket for its lights.

Best compact unlit potted tree

5. Christmas Tree World Majestic Dew Pine 3ft

The 3ft Majestic Dew Pine is 56cm across, with attached branches, a weighted pot and no built-in lights. It takes less space than the Cairngorm if you’re decorating a sideboard or a small corner. Its dew-effect finish is part of the look, though, so have a close look at the product photos if you’d prefer plain green foliage.

Choose it if: You have room for its 56cm width and would like to add your own lights and decorations.

Consider instead: The PVC bottle-brush branches and acrylic dew finish won’t be for everyone.

Best taller pencil tree without built-in lights

6. Christow Artificial Pencil Christmas Tree 5ft

This Christow 5ft pencil tree is 150cm tall and 40cm across. The two-tone PVC branches come attached, and its green plastic stand clips together without tools. It gives you more height than the 4ft Pencilimo in a similarly narrow space, but you’ll need to add your own lights. Leave room to open out the branches, fit a topper and walk past without brushing against it.

Christow Artificial Pencil Christmas Tree 5ft product image

Choose it if: You’d like a 5ft tree but only have room for its 40cm width, and you’re happy to add lights.

Consider instead: It has a noticeably narrow shape and a plastic stand rather than a metal one.

How to choose a small tree for your flat

Mark out the footprint first

Before you fall for the height, measure the widest part of the branches where the tree will go. Check that the door still opens, drawers pull out and everyone can walk past. If it’s going on furniture, make sure the surface is sturdy and wide enough for the tree above the pot.

Choose the shape that suits the position

Think about where the tree will live. A pencil tree can stand tall beside a sofa. A half tree gives you a fuller front against a wall. A potted tree might sit on a sideboard or become your main tree in a small room. Whichever you choose, leave enough space to open out its branches.

Think about lights and storage

Battery lights let you skip a cable across the floor, though you’ll need to change or recharge the batteries. Mains-powered pre-lit trees save you wrapping a light string but need a nearby socket. With an unlit tree, you can change the lights from year to year. Measure the packed sections before buying if cupboard space is tight; our tree-storage guide has tips for protecting the branches and wiring.

How we chose these

We chose trees that solve different small-space problems: a narrow corner, a wall, a tabletop and a spot without a socket. We checked the product heights, widths, shapes and lighting for these UK products, plus availability on 14 October 2026. We haven’t assembled or measured them ourselves, and prices and stock can change.

Choosing the right small tree

If width is your main worry, compare the 42cm pre-lit Pencilimo with the taller 40cm unlit Christow and decide whether height or built-in lights matter more. The Woodland Pine half tree makes better use of a wall, while the battery-lit Bergen can go where a socket would be awkward. Whatever you choose, give the branches room to open out.

Frequently asked questions

What size Christmas tree works in a flat?

Start with the floor space, not just the ceiling height. A 3ft potted tree can be surprisingly wide, while a 4ft pencil or half tree may take less space. Leave room for doors, furniture and people to pass.

Is a half Christmas tree suitable for a corner?

It can work, but check that the stand and branches sit safely in your corner. A flat-backed tree is mainly made to go against a wall, so measure its front width and how far it comes into the room.

Should I choose a pre-lit small tree?

A pre-lit tree saves you wrapping a separate string. Check whether it needs batteries or a socket, and what the maker says about repairs. An unlit tree lets you change the lights later.

How do I store a small artificial tree?

Take off the decorations and any separate lights, let the tree dry and avoid squashing the branches. Protect pre-lit connections, follow its manual and store it somewhere dry.
